According to British film magazine Empire, the working title for the first American Pie (1999) movie (as its script did the rounds at various Hollywood studios) was, “Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy That Can Be Made For Under $10 Million That Most Readers Will Hate But I Think You’ll Love”. And love it the world did to the tune of $350 million at the box office.

‘Nuff said. That's why there is American Pie 2 (2001) and now American Pie 3: American Wedding, whether we like it or not.

So Jim and Michelle (Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan reprising their AP roles) decide to get hitched in American Wedding. That’s about the long and the short of it. The script really has run out of steam by this film, and barely makes it to its 89 minutes finishing time. Despite their popularity, the Amercian Pie’s have never been big on good scripts – the set pieces and boofhead/blue slapstick is paramount – and neither the production values. The formula is an odd blend of sweet teen/20-something characters with extreme gross-out humour, and it has to be said that American Pie 3 – in amidst its comfy, upwardly mobile, white middle class setting - is the grossest of them all.

Eugene Levy as Jim’s dad is still a gem, Stifler’s mum is still buxom and dangerous as Finch’s ‘Mrs Robinson’, sex is still on everyone’s minds, Stifler faces off in a gay bar dance comp which is actually kinda funny, with its clunky-bad choreography… Jim’s pubes get stuck on the wedding cake and a coprophilia scene worthy of GG Allen and Pier Paulo Pasolini is sure to keep fans of this goofy/filthy franchise well happy.

Fun at times but not really that funny, American Pie 3: American Wedding rates 2 ½ stars.
